Brides Turn to Disney-Inspired Weddings for a Magical Touch

PLANNING A DISNEY WEDDING?

Different is IN!  Unique is a MUST and hum drum “tradition” is a relic in the modern Bride’s wants for her special Wedding Day.

As entertainers, we’ve seen many interesting weddings.  Some worked and others perhaps didn’t.  One wedding that does go hand and with elegance and magic is a Disney-Inspired Wedding.

DISNEY PRINCESSES

Belle, Cinderella, Jasmine, Ariel, Mulan, Rapunzel, Snow White, Pocahontas, Mulan, Merida, Tiana and Aurora top the list in amazing dresses and fantasy.  Any bride slipping into one of these character-inspired dresses (and shoes, of course) will immediately feel transported into another world.

IS THIS YOUR PASSION?

There are many things to consider when planning a Disney Wedding.  First, you’ve gotta’ LOVE Disney…and we mean LOOOOOVE it.  You will be eating, breathing it for several months prior and up through that day with the wedding photos to prove it for years after.

Once you’ve decided this and your betrothed is also on board with your wishes, the sky’s the limit, my Dear!

Here, before moving forward, we’ve decided to make a quick consideration check list.  This should be an initial list.

DISNEY WEDDING CONSIDERATIONS

Venue or Location is the FIRST thing you set.  Sometimes you do this BEFORE   you set the actual date.  These places fill up FAST…sometimes, over 18 months in    advance.  This is why we listed the perhaps, obvious and then the not so obvious.     Let your mind wander.  This is YOUR wedding…YOUR day.

DISNEY PRINCESSES

  • Which Disney Princess are you patterning your Wedding Dress after?  News flash!  Disney has a website that deals with this.  They actually have a Disney “Bridal Collection“.
  • The shoes are pretty important in a Disney Wedding.
  • You could also consider having your dress made by a dress maker or a Hollywood Costume designer.  There are several we know.  You can email us and we will hook you up!

THE BRIDAL PARTY

  • This is where it can get tricky.  You are the main princess.  What about your friends and family in the wedding.  How will you handle that?
  • The Groom:  He’s your night in shining armor.  Don’t forget about him.  As below, simple is always nice with that something “Prince-like” as an accessory to set him above the rest.
  • The Groomsmen?  Sometimes, less is more with them.  Black Tuxedos are always nice and will fit numerous Princess themes listed above.
  • The Flower Girl:  She’s the mini-Disney-Princess.  The kids always love dressing up like their favorite princess, just like you!

ENTERTAINMENT and WEDDING MUSIC

  • Ceremony Music.  There are many song selections you can pull from the Disney List.  See below.  Here, we list, Violinists, Pianists, Vocalists, Harpists, Trumpeters (very magical), and a Gospel Choir.
  • This is Disney.  Disney shows contain a lot of fabulous music.  Be mindful that a Reception Band probably won’t be a good fit.  You might want to consider a DJ for the main part of the reception.
  • Live Entertainment.  Live Entertainment is now the standard in adding a touch of class to any Wedding.  We like the Singing Waiter Option for events like these.  Yes, that’s us!  Broadway performers, dressed as Staff, or in these cases, we also suggest dressed as Disney Characters, coming out singing special songs like “Brand New World”,  “Home”,  “When You Wish Up On A Star”, “A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes” , “Circle of Life”, “Can You Feel the Love Tonight”.  These same singers can also sing at the wedding prior. A great bang for your buck and an exponential “wow” for your guests!
  • Here is a great Disney Wedding Song List (and more) that deals from the Ceremony and into the Reception.

SPECIAL TOUCHES AND NUANCES

  • Horse-Drawn Carriages.
  • A Disney Castle Wedding Cake
  • Disney Characters Entertain at Cocktails
  • A Barbershop Quartet for the Disneyland Experience.
  • Fireworks (sparklers work too) at the end of the night.

FAA Makes Decision on Cell Phones and Electronic Devices

Today the FAA announced that they will allow passengers to play games, watch videos and read books on their electronic devices during take off and landing, effective as early as the end of the year.

Cellphone use will still be restricted to airplane mode or cell service disabled, according to the Agency.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx feels that the decision “honors both our commitment to safety and consumers’ increasing desire to use their electronic devices during all phases of their flights…”.

Debate on whether it’s a good idea has been on the table for years…ever since electronic devices became much more accessible by the general public and more sophisticated.  Although this is a new move by the FAA, it’s a small gesture towards the real want that many passengers want-the ability to make calls, on their personal cellphone while in the air.

Airlines debate cell phone usage

Should cell phone calls be allowed on air flights?

Being an International Entertainment Act, all of The Amazing Waiters travel frequently, on numerous airlines during the year.  “After taking an informal poll, most of us feel that allowing passengers to make calls during flights would be a bad idea”, states James Anest, Co-Creator of the group.  “Just close your eyes and imagine this…imagine being on a flight, already cramped (if you’re in Coach), and the guy in the middle seat starts chatting on the phone 10 minutes into your 6 hour fight.  He talks for 45 minutes.  He can’t hear very well, so guess what?  He talks loudly…just close your eyes and imagine this…now imagine 4 or 5 other people around you doing the same thing…make sure you buy a good set of noise-canceling headphones….”  It’s not hard to understand why some would not want this.  According to a USA Today article written in October of 2012, “Airline customers have commonly opposed in-flight Cellphone capabilities because passengers don’t want to endure listening to calls from their fellow travelers on a flight,” says Victoria Day, spokeswoman for the industry group Airlines for America.

Should in air calling be allowed?

Making calls could be a distraction on airline flights

Many travelers would argue it’s an efficient way to conduct business on longer flights, thus making air travel more viable in the age of telecommunication-lengthening the work day for air commuters and making them more productive.  According the aforementioned USA Today article, “There is a misconception out there that it is dangerous,” says Patrick Brannelly, spokesman for Emirates Airline, which began offering the service in 2008 and now has it on about 90 of 175 planes. “I think the real fear is people jabbering on the phone at loud volume, annoying people around them. That just simply hasn’t happened.”

What would the cost be?  We think that the only reason the FAA has not allowed cell phone calls on planes during flight is because Cell Phone companies have not found a way to adequately charge for them.  If airlines cannot get a piece of the action for cell calls placed on their planes, why allow it?  The FAA report, which surveyed airlines about how the services work, found complaints about the cost of service or uncertainty about its availability on some planes. Costs vary. One carrier charges $12 a minute, though the price typically is about $2.50 for an average two-minute call.  If the charge is this high, maybe it won’t be such a pain to everyone around them.

What do you think?

By request, a repeat client recently the booked the Singing Waiters in Vancouver, B.C. for a private corporate event.  This was a pretty special evening as the group was asked to “mix it up” with 4 performers and sing with a live band.  The Waiters, along with the fabulous 6 Piece Band surprised guest and rocked the swanky Cotton Club setting for 150 guests with Old Hollywood Standards like “Orange Colored Sky”, “Luck Be A Lady” and “Someone To Watch Over Me“.

Here’s a brief snippet of  “Someone To Watch Over Me” sung by our fabulous Soprano.

This is a great way to entertain your guests if they’ve already seen Singing Waiters.  The Amazing Waiters can either wear the server uniforms or don Tuxedos and formal wear for a more elegant evening.  What started as a singing waiter group has now evolved into full-fledged stealth entertainment, customized for each individual event.

Opera in Orange County California

Will Opera Come Back To Orange County?

It’s unfortunate but we have to think that it will not…at least not in the form of a legitimate Opera Company. But, before we delve into this issue, let’s go back…before the economic meltdown of 2007-2008.

In the US, economy drives the arts. Meaning, that if Corporations and people, in general, are “in the money”, so are the arts. Since the late 2007 US Economic “Meltdown”, the arts have suffered dramatically because no one’s in the money like they used to me. But it really didn’t start there.

THE HEYDAY OF OPERA
Opera, since it’s heyday (ending around the late 1950’s) has been experiencing a steady decline in popularity and attendance. It’s not a surprise, once the popular music of its day, Opera has had the misconception that it’s “out of touch”, “elitist”, “expensive” and “stuffy”…yes and no. On the surface, yes. Ticket prices are expensive. Mounting operas are a massive undertaking. It takes a small army to produce a decent opera that includes sets, orchestra, large choruses, and soloists. The Met in New York City can have as many as 100 Orchestra Performers, 120 Chorus Members, 15-20 Soloists and another 15-20 Supernumeraries (Supers or Extras, as named in the Film Industry), and 30-50 Tech Crew Members. That doesn’t include all the ushers, security and ticket people in the theater, parking attendants, and administrative/support staff. Get the picture? But the part of the picture most people don’t get is, that Opera is not elitist. Opera is quite the contrary.

Maria Callas on Time Magazine

The heyday of opera put Diva Maria Callas on the Cover of major publications like Time.

OPERA FOR REAL PEOPLE
Opera, like most theater art-forms is a form of expression. Opera, rooted in theater (plays, like Shakespeare and before him, Greek Tragedies) was the medium the common folk flocked to and enjoyed, along side royalty…which was usually their oppressors. Subtle mockery of the class structure was common. Rebellion, aggression and sometimes overt messages to revolt were imbedded in many operas by Mozart, Verdi, Mussorgsky and others. Sometimes riots/fights broke out during operas once messages were realized or even if a singer did not perform to par!

Guiseppe Verdi, Composer

One of the greatest Italian National Composers of all time. Guiseppe Verdi

OPERA IN ORANGE COUNTY
But that was then and this is now. We found this article about the healthy state of Opera in America by The American in July 2007, just as the economic meltdown was starting. It stated that there were 125 American Opera Companies in the US…more than Germany and Italy and roughly more Americans “attend live opera performances as attend NFL Games.” Roughly 20 million Opera admissions per year. Here, in Orange County we had Opera Pacific, a great alternative to the OC Commute to LA Opera. There were even talks of the company going year-round. Poof! Gone! All in a matter of two years, the corporate and private subsidies dried up and the doors were closed for good.

Rich Orange County has no Opera Company.

With the withering of Opera Pacific, there is no viable opera company in Orange County

TICKET SALES DON’T KEEP A THEATER OPEN
Private money does. Corporations, private foundations, and a few still-existing national endowments keep the doors open. Season subscribers keep butts in seats and the General Mangers, their jobs. Beloved operas like Carmen, Madama Butterfly and La Bohème are all-time audience favorites attracting novices and seasoned theater go-ers to alike. Season subscribers love the standards. Another conundrum if you are the General Manager of an Opera Company. You have to please your base but offering new operas and educating the public on them is absolutely necessary if the Operatic Art Form is to survive.

Ticket Sales for Operas

Opera Tickets don’t solely keep the doors open.

TIMELESS ART
Art is timeless. So is great Opera. But the medium on how we receive our art is changing. The Metropolitan Opera in New York has, in the last two years, desperately tried to reach out to the general public by making their opera performances more accessible by offering them in regional movie theaters. Now, one can purchase a ticket at a fraction of the price of a live performance (and save you the air fare to NY City), get some popcorn and sit and watch a LIVE Metropolitan Opera Production in HD streaming directly in the movie theater. Cool! Very cool. As a bonus, the viewer is privy to backstage footage and live interviews of the stars singing as they enter and exit the stage. That’s amazing access. But is it reaching new audiences? The jury seems to still be out.

Orange County California is one of the most affluent Counties in California. With over 3 Million residents, it is the 3rd largest population-wise but the smallest land-wise in Southern California. The main artistic center is the Orange County Performing Arts Center in Costa Mesa. Segerstrom Center for the Arts provides all kinds of entertainment year-round and is the former home of the now defunct Opera Pacific.

Jackman Delivers in The Wolverine

Jackman Delivers in The Wolverine

This past weekend we went to see the latest X Men offspring opening, starring Broadway Star Hugh Jackman in The Wolverine.  Considered by many critics and movie analysts the only hope of a mega budget movie going into the plus side for the entire month of July, Jackman and a mostly non-descript cast deliver a “go-see” movie.  Mind you, we are not saying it’s AMAZING, but it is worth the $12 to have some decent entertainment that has some great moments.  Also, we are happy to see a good actor that had his beginnings in Musical Theater carrying a movie with a budget like this.

CNN has just reported that the Marvel-Owned Movie made over 55 Million Dollars this past weekend with “no competition this weekend…running in 3,924 locations — on target with studio estimates, but far below tracking projections”.  But considering what disappointments preceded this month-ending movie, it’s a breath of fresh air.

The movie, directed by James Mangold, has an interesting pace, starting out in what seems to be somewhere in the “middle” of Logan’s (Wolverine) life.  He’s a Japanese POW just before the “bomb” was dropped in WWII.  At this point, he already has his extraordinary powers so you don’t get any more information about his “past” for the rest of the movie.  In fact, the movie moves forward about 50-60 years forward from there.

Most of the movie takes place in Japan with a mostly Japanese cast.  Jackman’s Co-Star and love interest, Tao Okamoto is charming and does a nice understated job of acting.  The introduction of an Anime character “Yukio”, played by a relative unknown Fushia-Haired Rila Fukishima is adorable and dangerous, all at the same time.  The martial-arts sequences with her are great!

The story-line has is foibles and the plot and penultimate ending is pretty loose but make sure you stick around for the movie credits, X-Men fans won’t be disappointed.  Just sayin’!

We found it refreshing that the movie wasn’t bound to using “name” actors that American audiences would equate with what characters would appear in this movie.  And since it isn’t an X-Men movie, we were pleasantly relieved that we wouldn’t be able to put together a scenario at the opening credits.

The Wolverine has moderate violence and we would make sure you observe the Rating of PG-13.

HOLIDAY ENTERTAINMENT BOOKING

HOLIDAY ENTERTAINMENT BOOKING

Christmas in July?  Well, not quite…but Holiday Entertainment is on the minds of many event planners and companies looking to book top-shelf entertainment before it’s too late.

Planning a Holiday Event for your Boss, Company, Country Club, or even a Holiday Wedding takes a fair amount of coordination.  Entertainment is a must.  It breaks the ice, keeps the party from awkward silence and can put your guests in the frame of mind you are trying to achieve.  Holiday entertainment is the second thing that should get booked (after venue selection) securing the entertainment you want at the best price.

Summer Booking for Winter Entertainment is a great idea.

Booking Holiday Entertainment Early is a good idea.

 LAST MINUTE ENTERTAINMENT BOOKINGS

As with flying an airline, there were times one could wait to book at the last minute, possibly saving 15-25%.  Those days are very few and far between.  Booking at the last minute could cost you and your company much more than you planned, sometimes putting entertainment out of your budget all together and forced to ask your co-workers friend’s friend to come in and play a random iTunes play list for your guests.

BOOK EARLY AND SAVE ON ENTERTAINMENT

Many companies, The Amazing Waiters included, are now offering very attractive pricing for early Holiday Bookings, savings of 10-20% on pricing plus a huge savings on production costs if booked in bundles.

LOOK FOR FIT FIRST, THEN PRICE IT

We are all price conscious these days and many more consumers shop before they buy which is a good thing, alleviating sticker shock and buyer’s remorse.  Shopping for a great price should be the second thing you do.  We recommend to shop for what options seem to be a good fit for your event.  Get 2 or 3 options.  Then narrow down your short list by getting all the information you need which should always include at least 2-3 live videos of actual shows, a confirmation of how long the show is, the actual price for what you want and a contract stating all the above.  It’s not rocket science but keeping things professional and clear will alleviate any discrepancies or confusion in the future.

 LIVE HOLIDAY ENTERTAINMENT

There are many entertainment options for your Holiday Event and perhaps one or more will be suitable for your guests, bringing just the right amount of “wow factor”.  Live Bands are fun for creating a party atmosphere all through the night.  They can then ramp up the music after dinner, creating a great dance opportunity (and photos too) for your guests and their dates.  Singing Waiter Entertainment brings a classy element, usually to the dinner portion of the evening, creating the surprise element and band cannot and taking a live performance from the stage to your guests.  Strolling Magicians are especially fun if you have a wide age-range, appealing to young and old.

 MEMORABLE HOLIDAYS

From small parties to large corporate events, great holiday entertainment can make the night memorable and your guests smiling from ear to ear.

 FUN HOLIDAY ENTERTAINMENT

The Amazing Waiters provide customized vocal entertainment shows for the Holidays.

Adam Lambert to Star on Glee!

Adam Lambert to grace the set of Glee Adam Lambert

We are very happy to hear that Adam Lambert will be on Glee in some capacity next season.  The former Musical Theater Performer has come a long way since his stint on a Los Angeles stage with Val Kilmer in “The Ten Commandments.“.

Speculation has been running rampant as to what Lambert’s role will be.   Initially Lambert stated he would like to play himself.  Why not?  The guy has morphed into an undisputable representative of the minority and with a rampant following of Glamberts he may transform the entertainment landscape again by creating Gleekerts.  No matter… American Idol really goofed when they didn’t work out a deal for Adam to become a judge on his former star transporter possibly giving the show a jolt out of the DOA fix it’s gotten itself into.

Congrats!

Happy Birthday America!

Fourth of July, America’s Day to picnic and party!

People may have a lot to say about America, but one thing that cannot be disputed.  We Americans know how to celebrate!  Although America has 11 Federal Holidays which is less than half of the World Leader, Cambodia with 27, America has one of the biggest Birthday Celebrations the World Round.

237 Years old (if you go by the Signing of the Declaration of Independence) we youngsters on the World Stage are just getting to our “21st Birthday” so to speak, allowing us to still party like rock stars.

America’s sport, Baseball Celebrates by scheduling games in almost every market with singers singing that ever so tricky melody by Francis Scott Key,  The National Anthem called The Star Spangled Banner made our official tune on March 3rd, 1931 by then President Herbert Hoover (and you thought “Mr. Clandestine” was all about the CIA!).

So, in the spirit of music and the likelihood that you yourself might be humming and compelled to sing along, now’s a good time to refresh those words.

The Star Spangled Banner

by Francis Scott Key

O say can you see by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there;
O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave,
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe’s haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o’er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning’s first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream:
‘Tis the star-spangled banner, O! long may it wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion,
A home and a country, should leave us no more?
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps’ pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave,
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

O thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war’s desolation.
Blest with vict’ry and peace, may the Heav’n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: “In God is our trust.”
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

 Notice a few things…

1.  “Through the perilous fight”  not perilous flight.

And how about those crazy “extra” verses?  Did you even know there were MORE lyrics to our beloved National Song?  Impress your inebriated friends this afternoon with the ol’ arm around and sing it for them.  It’ll probably be good for a free drink.  Let us know how it goes.

See a 1862 Sheet Music Cover…the art work is pretty cool.

Old Hollywood Entertainment With A Modern Twist

Latest Trend: Old Hollywood

Are we late in labeling it? Old Hollywood has returned! Everywhere we seem to turn, days of yore are popping up. Everywhere from TV with Mad Men, to the resurgence of Rat Pack shows (Vegas) to clothing styles on the Red Carpet. It’s everywhere.

Is the public following or leading this trend? Traditionally, trends are set by media and followed by the general public. But is the tail wagging the dog here?

The Amazing Waiters have a great Rat Pack Show.

Relaxed and Entertaining.

Style Never Goes Out Of Vogue – Permanently
There an old saying, “If I hold on to it long enough, it will come back in style.” (God help us if the feathered back hair style re-emerges) and if you’ve lived long enough in this World, you will see that History does tend to repeat itself, even in fashion.

We have to say, we like Old Hollywood. We like almost everything about it. We even patterned a show after it. The reason. It’s cool. It’s retro and people still love good wholesome entertainment.

Old Hollywood is the epitome of style and class. It’s hard to think of another Era that can rival it. 1927-1963 is generally the accepted span of its hey day. Starting with the end of the Silent Film Era and starting with the film “The Jazz Singer” (1927). Nicely detailed by film theorist, David Bordwell, Old Hollywood was the second boom of American Cinema. The first being Silent Movies. Bordwell’s detailed chronicle is worth some reading if you have a good weekend.

It’s not hard to understand why this type of old school entertainment still is desired today. Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr. had it goin’ on!
